8 problem personalities

Here are 8 types of students to look out for, they still need us, they are longing for our guidance and in most cases desperately need it. Reaching these students is very challenging but who doesn't love a great challenge.

Don't give up on these students but don't give in, discipleship is hard work but always worth the investment!

1.   The Comedian

·       Comedians are funny and quite likable, but their humor isn’t the point-getting attention is the goal.

·       Any attention is good attention to this student.

·       Sometimes others laugh at what these entertaining clowns do, and that gives them the sense that they’re admired, but it’s usually untrue.

2.   The Gossip

·       A gossip is like a traitor, they chip away at trust and they work undercover. What they mainly accomplish is that they have a damaging impact that can spread like wild fire.

·       Gossips thrive on false intimacy. When gossip A talks to gossip B about gossip C, gossip A feels a counterfeit closeness to gossip B.

Proverbs 25:18 “Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.”

3.    The Bully

·       The Bully uses anger fear, and intimidation-verbal and non-verbal- to get what he or she wants.

·       Bullying is usually a sign of insecurity.

·       Since Bullies don’t trust authority, they experience a twisted form of power and control. They actually think they are always in charge.

·       The bible tells us that the devil is a bully. So classify yourself.

4.   The Dear Abby

·       The Dear Abby kid tries to be everyone’s counselor matchmaker and all-around helper.

·       This student can look safely other-centered, but Dear Abby’s act out of a vacuum in their souls.

·       The Dear Abby’s never focus on themselves and what they need from God or others, they only spotlight on what others need leaving them depressed and even more addicted to finding their identity in solving others’ problems.

5.   The Emotional Train Wreck:

·       This personality style surfaces in many variations including depression, neediness or dramatic behavior, insecurity, and serious social awkwardness.

·       They drain others emotionally and don’t get better when others offer encouragement.

·       Patience and time have no real Positive impact on them.

Proverbs 25:28 “A person without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken down walls.”

6.   The Phantom:

·       Phantom kids are hard to read- they’re often regular attendees in our ministry, but they’re often “there but not there.” They are watching like a hawk to see if you’re real.

·       They secretly expect us to find the magic key to unlock the door to their heart; if we don’t then we’ve let them down.

·       Phantom students fade into the background because they’ve likely been abused or over-controlled.

·       Phantom’s want the church to fail them in some way so they can have an eternal excuse to dismiss themselves from God and His house.

Hebrews 9:27 “It is destined that each person dies only once and after that comes judgment.”

7.   The Whiner

·       Whiners are grumbling complainers who have a knack for detecting fault wherever they look.

·       Whiners are hard to like.

·       These students know they can get under your skin.

·       Their cynicism drains people.

·       Most whiners have experienced major disappointments from key people- they feel abandoned.

“Complaining is the language of unbelief.”

8.   The Golden Child

·       The Golden Child is an exclusive problem personality because he/she does everything just the way you’re “supposed” to do.

·       These students are just plain good- they like to play by the rules within whatever adult structure they can find. They are usually superficial and they spend most of their time praying and hoping no one finds out.

·       They have this whole Christianity thing down pat.

·       They have a regular quiet time, show up on time to ministry events and are involved in every program.

·       Often, these kids have found ways to use God to make their lives work. Like a well-known athlete who uses sports to get applause the Golden Child uses God to make things go smooth and proper.

Closing- We will love you any way, no matter how you treat us.

·       All of these kinds of students are high maintenance low impact Christians. Never reaching their full God given potential.

Luke 5:30-32 “But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus' disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with such scum? 31 Jesus answered them, "Healthy people don't need a doctor—sick people do.32 I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent."

·       We will always see past color, race, creed, and financial status in the life of every student.

·       But we will not let you run, disrupt, or disrespect our call to ministry nor our gift of us loving our God.

·       Jesus said He would turn us over to our reprobate (good for nothing) minds if we would not listen too or serve Him.

·       We serve Christ out of love, and respect, not out of duty or obligation.

Be the difference

Genesis 7:13 “That very day Noah had gone into the boat with his wife and his sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives.14 With them in the boat were pairs of every kind of animal—domestic and wild, large and small—along with birds of every kind.15 Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes.16 A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD closed the door behind them.”

·       God chooses who goes, who stays, who’s worthy of grace and mercy.

o     Our job is to be the difference.

1.The church’s business summed up in one word is…people.

a. The church’s mission summed up in one word is…people.

b.Jesus Christ’s sole mission summed up in: “died for people.”

2.Jesus died for people not programs, facilities, ideas, or business deals, but people.

a. Jesus did not die for religion, or a philosophical system of ethical behavior, or rules and regulations, or the next big event, or this church or that church, or rituals and good works.

b.Jesus didn’t lay His life down for your personal preference of music, carpet color, chairs or pews, preaching, teaching or worship, He died for people.

c. People are what mattered to Him, people are what He surrendered to, and people are what He laid down His life for.

John3:16, 17"For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

3.God loves people, Jesus loves people, the Spirit of God empowers people, not programs, ideas, curriculums, events, or handouts but people.

a. Good people, bad people, people who lie, people who cheat, people who steal, people who mistreat other people and some who have even killed people.

1 John 3:11 “This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 14 If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 18 Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”

b.People who are nice, people who are mean, people you can't stand and people who can't stand you.

                                                           i.      People who didn't deserve it, people who couldn’t purchase it, people who couldn't earn it, and people who won't accept it He.. died…for…them…all.

c. God did not tell Noah to pick and choose through the animals.

                                                           i.      He didn’t say I want you to kill the mosquitoes cause they are annoying and they suck no pun intended.

ii.      Leave off the skunks’ cause they stink.

iii.      Don’t load the raccoons or badgers because they fight.

iv.      Refuse the big cat family, panthers lions, tigers, bears oh my, cause they eat everybody up with their mouths.

                                                       v.      Keep the peacock’s from boarding cause they walk around with their beautiful tail stuck up in the air saying I’m better than you, more beautiful than you, and everybody wants to be me.

vi.      The anteater’s stick their tongue into everything.

vii.      Those big eared elephants wanting to hear all that gossip everyone’s passing around.

viii.      The bug eyed tree frog’s are too nosey, got those shifty eyes staring at everybody making them nervous.

ix.      God said to load them all.

                                                       x.      We have to live our lives in a “Load All” mentality.

Ezekiel 34:21 “For you fat sheep pushed and butted and crowded my sick and hungry flock until you scattered them to distant lands.”

4.If you always come to church and hear the Word of God and you feed your Spirit but you never release that word into the life of another than you will become spiritually fat, spiritually obese, and good for nothing in the Kingdom of God.

a. I am sick of the church talking about evangelizing the world yet not doing it.

                                                           i.      Who are you sharing the Gospel with?

                                                        ii.      Who are you discipling?

iii.      Who are you rescuing from hell and destruction?

                                                    iv.      Where are your converts?

                                                       v.      We have to witness it’s a command of God.

vi.      Who are the people God has chosen, commanded, and blueprinted you to minister to?

Evangelism- the winning or renewal of personal commitments to Christ.

b.The world can not read our minds nor our spirits, they will see our lives, they will hear our words if we have validity and respect in their eyes.

                                                           i.      When we love people as Christ loved them and gave Him self for them then we will make the difference.

                                                        ii.      We will be…the difference.

Without mixture

Proverbs 5:15-18 (NLT)
"Drink water from your own well-share your love only with your wife. [16] Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone? [17] You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers. [18] Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth."

Biblically I am to give my affections to my wife and only to my wife.
This is the way God Himself designed love, designed romance, designed marriage.
What happens is people begin to slowly gradually give away their affections to so many other things.
This is why divorce is so rampant, this is why life is so confusing, relationships are so shallow, because God has intended for us to only be connected to one wife or husband.
People begin to give their affections away at puberty and don't have the realization or understanding that God wants all your affection to go to your spouse.
They give their affections away through the things they look at, adore, fall in lust with, and have sexual encounters with.
People give away their affection through kissing, looking at, fantasizing about, touching, having sex either in the mind or even person to person.
Then they call it love, romance, and fulfillment when the bible calls it sin.
Then when they decide to get married or to get serious they can't understand why all their affections have been divided, tainted, watered down and diluted so when things get tough they revert back to Junior High and say well I didn't like him anyway he was flirting with all my friends.
My wife is the only woman that should receive my kisses.
My hugs. My affections.
My looks. My daydreams.
My touch. My body.
My attention and my passion.
Giving that away at any other time in any other way is out of the order of God.

1 Timothy 4:12 (NLT)
"Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity."

You can be an example now.
You don't have to wait til you're old to set an exemplary life.
People think they have to go through all these problems, all these issues, all these trials, and all this shame, so they can "understand" before they get serious about their relationship with God, serious about purity, serious about their family, serious about their spouse and serious about their future.
As a matter of fact you are either an example of what to do and how to live life or an example of how not.
Biblically, all of us are.

Illustrate here: Water bottle. Uncapped brand new.

The water inside this bottle has been purified, tested, enriched, and is 100% pure drinking water that has been processed by Ozonatioted, Advance Filtration and Reverse Osmosis Technologies.

We are a part of a generation that does not know the meaning of the word pure.
Now I want to clarify for you what God's definition if purity is.
Purity is the state of being without mixture.
Without mixture!
From the beginning of creation, God intended for you to be an individual.. dedicated..solely..to..His...purposes.

Genesis 1:26 (NLT)
Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground."

When God made Adam and Eve in His image He made them completely pure.
They were consumed with doing God's will.
Next we see that Man's consumption of the fruit was an act of disobedience and a deliberate decision to give into self-will rather than God's will.
The mixture of self-will with God's will originated with Man's choice to do his own thing and the bible says that from that point on, mixture entered man.
Compromised purity resulted in contamination-a contamination that God is still working to restore.
You have got to get decontaminated and live the way God originally intended you to-without mixture.
Don't mix what is pure with things that are that are impure.
The Holy Spirit is our filtering process.
When we begin to ask Him to lead, encourage, discipline, and change us life as we know it changes forever.
Sex is beautiful if we are walking in line with the purity the God has set in order, but compromise turns it into torment and affliction-it will either be one or the other.
I believe we have to not be willing to remain silent while our peers go to hell.
God wants us to use our words, our lives, our abilities, to change the life of people around us who are hungry for truth and in desperate need of Jesus.
Say something with your life.
Say something with your decisions.
Say something with your influence.
Say something with your purity.
Say something.
I believe you can find your identity in your Heavenly Father and be motivated by a desire to please Him that dictates the way you live your life.
I believe you can live pure.
But I know you can’t live pure in and through your own strength.
Jesus loves you the way you are so He can make you into the person He wants you to become.
Purity extends far beyond not doing wrong, not sleeping with somebody, not watching provocative TV shows.
Purity is the restoration of the image of God in you.
Don’t you know that you are the only Jesus some people will ever see?
In compromising your lifestyle, you forfeit your capacity to accurately reflect God’s image and endanger an entire generation’s understanding of Jesus.
The image of God in you will shine out, radiate out, it will be impossible to hide Him as He lives in you.
Why would you want to?

2 Timothy 2:22 (NLT)"Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts."

I love that God gives us clear cut direction on what to run from and more importantly what to pursue.
The closer you get to fulfilling your dream, the harder Satan will try to entice you to sin.
This is because the fulfillment of your destiny will lead to the enemy's demise.
Don't be deceived into believing you can have it all and change the world.
One or the other. Your choice.
Your ability to live pure depends upon your belief in the reality that God is working for you while the enemy is working against you.
Without mixture.
What do you need to allow the Spirit of God to filter out?
Out of your mind?
Out of your desires?
And out of your present so it can be out of your future?

3 reasons your thoughts will affect your performance

If you’ve ever been at a great height and had someone tell you, “Don’t look down!”  then you already understand this concept you will focus on and be drawn towards what you allow to dominate your thoughts. These are 3 reasons your thoughts will affect your performance.

3 THOUGHTS YOU MUST KEEP OUT

If your thoughts affect your focus and your focus determines your direction. Then here are 3 thoughts that you must keep out so you can keep moving in the right direction

1.     What if I fail?  Don’t spend your time thinking about failure think about what it takes to win. Allowing yourself to think about failure makes the event about how you will look or whom you will let down instead of being about doing your best for Christ.

2.     What do others think about me?

o       Fans and spectators will always have contrasting opinions. But, good or bad the opinions of other people cannot score points or win souls into heaven.

o       If you study hard, pray hard, keep your character strong and always give your best effort, the results will speak for themselves.

o       I don’t care what the world says about me.

o       I don’t care what my enemies say about me.

o       I don’t even care what my friends say about me.

o       I only believe and concern myself with what God says about me. What Christ has to say about me.

o       Their words are eternal.

o       Their words about me are words, promises, statements made from heaven itself, the creators of all the universe and everything in it. And their comments will last forever.

James 3

3.     “What about my past?”

o       Whether you have missed your mark one time or 100 times, dwelling on that will only keep you from reaching your goal again.

o       Replace those thoughts by thinking about how good it will be in succeeding in your goals and passions.

o       Revelation 22:14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. 15 Outside the city are the dogs--the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.”

o       Jesus Christ our example preached what He lived and lived what He preached.

o       He didn’t tell people to pray and not pray Himself.

o       He didn’t tell people to read their bibles and not spend time devoting Him self to His.

o       He didn’t tell people not to judge each other and go and be judgmental.

o       He didn’t tell people to heal the sick, raise the dead, bless those that curse you bless and curse not and not be caught doing these things DAILY!

o       Jesus Christ was a living, breathing, walking talking example of how to treat all of humanity and how to live supernaturally..

o       He always spoke truth, and continually lived the truth.

John 21:25”And I suppose that if all the other things Jesus did were written down, the whole world could not contain the books.”

Pressure

Pressure is a very weird obstacle to overcome.
Pressure makes some people function better and paralyzes others.
Pressure is found in our every day lives.
Pressure is found in our jobs, in our school work, in our relationships, in our friendships, in our families, in our minds and will definitely be a part of our future.
Releasing that pressure in the right way and at the right time is our ultimate goal.

2 types of pressure we are going to talk about they are Building and Killing.

1. What is an example of building pressure?
  • Pressure to do what is right, attend church, accountability.
  • Building pressure is the good kind of pressure that will ensure your future is successful.
  • Building pressure is doing right because others are counting on you.
  • Building pressure does just that it builds you.
    • It builds character, it builds a good reputation, it builds spirituality, it builds strength physically/spiritually/emotionally.
    • Building pressure is what will catapult you into your future because your foundation is solid.
      • No solidification then no future.
    • Many people have a continuation of destruction in their relationship to God because they refuse to build on a good foundation.
    • Building pressure is you choosing the right friends, right relationships, right paths to follow in this life.
      • Those friends that tell you the truth, those family members who see your greatest potential and not your greatest weaknesses.
John 14:6 (NLT) "Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

2. What is an example of killing pressure?
Pressure to do what is wrong, drink, language(foul and negative), smoke, people who pull you away from God, not toward.

Proverbs 24:10 (NLT) "If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small."

  • This is amazing yet so scary to me humans dwell in this pressure to compete, pressure to outdo, pressure to try to be better than any other human out there and I define that as a killing pressure.
    • This type of pressure kills your dreams, kills your potential, kills your spirit, kills your mindset, kills your individuality.
      • Healthy competition is great on any level but don't misunderstand what I'm saying here.
What are some ways to overcome pressure others put on us?
  • Be confident in your mission.
  • Be unique not engaged in being everyone else.
  • Don't fulfill the killing pressure.
    • I believe that spending all my time trying to mimic who, what, why, and where everyone else is, is sin.
    • God designed me to be me for Him.
    • Be unique for Him, His purposes, His design for my life.
1 Corinthians 15:33-34 (NLT) "Don't be fooled by those who say such things, for "bad company corrupts good character."

What are some of the ways we bring the pressure from others upon ourselves?
  • Hypocritical living is the Christians worst nightmare.
    • Hypocritical-Professing qualities you don't possess or are in contradiction to.
    • The greatest single cause of atheism are Christians who say one thing with their mouths and walk out the door and live out another.
    • When you say what you are stay what you are, live out what you are, there is a cause within you dying to get out!

Building pressure is again our goal.

1 Corinthians 15:57 (NLT) "But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ."
1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT) "So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless."

What promise does the Bible give us if we can stay faithful to God’s Word and not give into the pressure we face daily?

Matthew 9:17 (NLT) "And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved."
  • Jesus explains that He has come not to "patch up" the old institutions of Judaism, but to institute a new covenant altogether.
  • The new covenant doesn’t just patch up the old; it supersedes it.
  • They put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved: Jesus’ reference to the wineskins is His announcement that the present institutions of Judaism could not, and would not, contain His new wine.
    • He would form a new institution, "The Church, which would bring Jew and Gentile together into a completely new body. (Ephesians 2:16)
  • Not just rules and regulations but grace, mercy, truth and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
  • God's eternal plan destroying the works of the flesh.
    • Earning goodness, holiness, and Godliness was no longer given through the law but through Jesus Christ.
  • Jesus reminds us that what is old and stagnant often cannot be renewed.
  • God will often look for new vessels to contain His new work, until those vessels make themselves unusable.
Remain mold able not moldy for God to continue to use you.

Genesis 39:10 (NLT)"She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible."

Psalm 119:143-144 (NLT) "143 As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands. 144 Your laws are always right; help me to understand them so I may live."

When the pressure is Great allow God to be greater.
When the stress is great allow God to be greater.
When the depression is great allow God to be greater.
When the demands are great allow God to help you carry them.

Matthew 11:28 (NLT) "Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
